What type of oils are best used to make soap (other questions inside)?

1. how can one make a mold (like is it made from plastic, metal, wood)

The easiest oil for a beginner is olive oil, it's readily available at any supermarket and makes an excellent face and body soap.

For a mold, you'll do best with plastic. The active lye in raw soap can eat at metal or do a chemical-burn on wood. I use a Rubbermaid-style food-storage box, about 5" x 8", and cut the soap into bars after it has set up but before it is too hard to cut.

Yes, you can mix oils. Different oils have different properties, but online calculators such as this one make it easy to come up with a good soap recipe using whatever oils or fats you like:

Essential oils are best for scenting soap. Add them after the soap has traced and just before you pour into your mold.
