Making my own mosaic tiles for the bathroom?
Does anyone know if you can Make Your Own mosaic tiles for a small bathroom? Is it only realistic for the walls, or can you do it for the floors and have it be "water-tight"? I'm not in the middle of the project or anything, I was just wondering about doing it for a new floor in our bathroom. Also, if the floor wouldn't work, what about a counter-top?
We already have the equipment needed to cut the glass for the mosaic part, and I can easily find patterns for it, but I'm hoping for some input from someone who has done this before or knows of someone who has. What kind of sealant did you use, if any? What sort of backing did you use? What other tips could you give me based on your experience?

I think you are thinking glass pieces. I would not use glass. I would use porcelain or regular clay tiles. You can get a lot for a cheap price if you use the "left overs" from other tile jobs that a tile store may have. You can design your own pattern, say a diamond with an initial in it. You can take a pillow case and put the tiles in it, and use a hammer to break them. If you want to make them different sizes, then you have the equipment but be sure to use water when you saw it. I would find the center and draw something out, or draw it on a paper and lay the paper on the floor, adjusting as you need to. When you have your tile ready, use a regular tile glue from the store. Get the metal trial that has a notched end and a straight smooth end. Trial on the glue, and then using the notched side, run that thru the glue. Put glue on the piece of tile also. You should get the little cross pieces that you place in between the tiles so the grout lines are all alike. They come in a bag of maybe fifty. Put one edge down between the tiles and two edges on top of the tiles. You can move them as you extend the area. Then start setting the tiles according to your lines. Use a level to make sure all of them are level across the top as you go. After you are finished, let it dry overnight and then the next day you can apply the grout. Apply with a trial, do not scratch the surface, and then using a large sponge with water, work the grout into the grout lines, and keep washing your sponge out and wiping until the tiles are cleaned off but the grout is even all over. Let this dry a day or two and then apply a grout sealer. You can apply it with a small brush 1/2" wide or less. Let the sealer dry. That way if you drop something on it the grout will not discolor. You can also do this with a sink but you would have to put a new hole and plunger in it because you have raised it up. Once you have done it, you will have confidence to do it again. I think I will do a birdbath this year. I heard birds like color too.
