Which Rigid-Heddle Loom?
I am going to try a new craft: weaving. I already established that the Rigid-Heddle Loom is for me, but I just don't know what size? There is a Rigid Heddle 16 in. 8 dent. and 16 in. 10 dent. Then there is Rigid Heddle 24 in. 8 dent and 24 in. 10 dent. I noticed these sizes while I was looking through a catalog. Can anyone tell me what these sizes mean and also which size I should get because I was kinda thinking of making afghans and scarves with it. Thank you very much!
Dent is the number of slots per inch in the reed (the device that holds the yarns to create the weaving area or shed) that the reed has per inch. The higher the number the more threads or strands of yarn, the finer the threads you can use to create different fabrics. Afghans and scarves only, as well as placemats and table runners made from sport to worsted type yarns or chenille, could easily be done on an 8 or 10 dent reed. Finer (read less rustic) fabrics require more dents per inch, so if you wanted to use, say, perle cotton, or 2/20 threads you'd need a higher dent per inch. This is not to say that you can't double or triple the threads in each dent, but it makes it more difficult to spread the weft out sufficiently to weave with finer threads.

Small Loom & Freeform Weaving: Five Ways to Weave $9.97 30 projects for home decor and fashion accentspYarn arts and felting are two of today's most popular crafts, and popularity for weaving, a natural extension of those crafts, is growing. Small hand-held looms and tabletop looms are now available at yarn shops and hobby/craft stores, and readers of Small Loom and Freeform Weaving can even construct looms themselves using common household materials. Most looms can be constructed in a couple minutes and can be reused numerous times.pThis book will also show readers how to use their looms. Included are 30 projects, some of which can easily be completed in an evening or weekend. Readers will enjoy step-by-step, diagrammed instructions for personal items, such as iPod and cell phone holders, scarves, purses, and jewelry, and home decor projects, such as pillows, table runners, wall hangings, and book covers.Matthiessen, Barbara. Small Loom & Freeform Weaving, Creative Pub: Quayside. 2008. c.128p. ISBN 978-1-58923-361-4. pap. $19.95. FIBER CRAFTS Purchasing a large, expensive loom is cost prohibitive for many novice weavers, and Matthiessen provides a variety of less expensive alternatives. Her solutions range from a homemade loom constructed from hair combs, dowels, and duct tape (yes, it's as primitive as it sounds) to commercial products such as Weavettes and the Ashford Knitter's Loom, a rigid heddle loom marketed to knitters. Matthiessen covers all aspects of weaving, including warping the loom, basic techniques, and finishing. Her low-cost approach to weaving will attract those curious about this ancient craft. Recommended for public libraries. - Library Journal, August 2008 |
