Oil paint question...?
We did oil painting in art class and now I am considering attempting to oil paint at home. I have a few questions...
1. How much does oil paint cost (I only want black and white) and do they sell it at stores like walmart??
2. My art teacher made her own oil paint using regular house paint (I think), how do you do this??
3. One of my biggest problems with oil painting in art class was having my brushes get hard. How can I keep them from getting hard, do I need some special kind of cleaning fluid or what?? Also should I get a new set of brushes just for oil paint??

I already have a canvas
Walmart might sell oil paints but most likely not. You really need to go to an art supply store (look online in your area there are many around). Oil paint is expensive and remember to squeeze only 1/2 inch of paint out...basically as little as possible because a little goes a long way and you dont want to waste it.
Do not use house paint use professional oil art paint that comes in metal tubes sold at art stores. Also you need to buy a canvas for oil painting. Regular paper will not work for oils. If you go to any art supply store they can answer all these questions for you.
You can buy the plastic paint holders to mix and hold the paint you squeeze out. Or you can get a piece of thick glass or buy a large bathroom tile to use to hold the paint and mix it if you want to save money.
Also you may want to construct an easel. You can make them out of wood. You need something to hold your painting while you paint.

Williamsburg Handmade Oil Paint $28.67 Williamsburg founder and painter Carl Plansky entered the paint business as the result of a happy accident. In 1985, Plansky obtained his first paint mill from fellow artist Milton Resnick in return for continuing to make paint for Resnick, a task that had become too arduous for the artist to continue. Working from his new mill in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, Plansky began making paint for Resnick, himself, and others. Experimenting with materials on a large scale, he eventually discovered how to make an oil paint that was richly pigmented and dense. Although he had no plans to sell his paint, within a year Plansky’s artist-friends had bartered and bought enough paint from him to turn Plansky into the master supplier of the Williamsburg art crowd. The “underground legend” that was Williamsburg Handmade Oil Paints was eventually made available to the public. Today, Plansky’s paint-makers continue to source the best raw materials in the world, importing pigments from dozens of countries. Each is carefully ground to enhance the beauty and luminosity specific to each pigment, then ground into pure, premium, alkali-refined and pH-balanced linseed oil. Every color in the line possesses a unique consistency and texture — some are slightly gritty, and some are extremely smooth. Every color is made in small batches no larger than five gallons at a time to ensure the highest level of control over the product. In addition, every ingredient is hand-measured, and every ounce of paint is scrutinized. Carl Plansky died on October 10, 2009, at the age of 58. The artist-craftsmen of Williamsburg Artist Materials, trained by Plansky to make paint like artists, are dedicated to ensuring that his legacy continues.
